Thing 2--Web 2.0 Reflection

I have seen the Web 2.0/The Machine is Us video by Michael Wesch (found on "The Shifted Librarian" site) multiple times, and it still impresses me every time I see it. The things we are able to do with technology these days are amazing. Web 2.0 technology has made it easier to connect people and create digital content to share with the world. The implications are endless! In my library, I have already created a blog to promote library materials and programs. The librarians in my district use a Wiki to discuss important matters that pertain to us all when we aren't able to meet face to face. I also attended some wonderful sessions at the TLA conference about creating book trailers, using Wiki's for collaboration, and using other Web 2.0 technologies to reach students and increase interest in library programs. I plan to start using Wikis with teachers and students in the future. I hope to open a Shelfari bookshelf soon, which I will also add to my blog. Students in this age are linked way more than even my generation (and I'm not that old). Providing them with a digital connection to the library is probably the type of connection they understand best.

Stephan Abram's video provides some insight into what to expect out of this 23 things course. I kind of just jumped in without thinking much of the time it would entail, the things I would get out of it, or the "consequences" of it all. He drove the point home that we make time for what is important, and for me, personal and professional growth is a priority. Even though things are crazy busy for me at this point in my life, it is important for me to do this. As a librarian, my mission includes "creating life long learners who use information for both knowledge and pleasure" (Leander I.S.D. Librarian's Purpose Statement). This 23 things project will help me to learn by doing and to transfer that knowledge to my library users. It is kind of exciting, don't you think?
